Kicking off 2014 on the right track

With the holidays behind us, now is the perfect time to refocus on your health. Here are some tips to help you kick off 2014 on the right track:

1. Start moving. Exercise is like a magic pill that helps us lose weight, sleep better, increase our energy, reduce anxiety, depression and increase overall feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Whether you commit to joining a gym, starting a yoga practice, or walking, aim to be active for 30 minutes three times per week. 80% of the health benefits from exercise can be achieved with as little as this.

2. Eat more greens! Leafy green vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting phytochemicals. They’re a rich source of fibre to help lower cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Start by adding a serving of vegetables to your dinner that is approximately the size of your fist. If you’re trying to lose weight, replace one cup of carbohydrates (rice, pasta, bread) in one meal with extra vegetables. This small change can lead to over 10 lbs of weight loss in one year.

3. Adopt an attitude of gratitude. Expressing thanks for what we have shifts our focus to the positive and cultivates more optimism in our lives. Health isn’t just about what we eat; our mind and thoughts have powerful, physiological effects on the body. Commit to journaling three things you’re grateful for everyday for the next 30 days (no matter how big or small) and see the difference this makes on your attitude and mindset.
