How to Beat Cravings

When a craving hits and you’re deciding whether or not to give in, using the words “I don’t” (for example, I don’t eat chocolate cake) can make you eight times more likely to be successful than saying “I can’t” (for example, I can’t eat chocolate cake). A study conducted by Vanessa Patrick at the University of Houston found that when you say “I don’t” you’re choosing words that signal empowerment and determination rather than ones that signal deprivation. Reframing our language to use an “empowered refusal” increases feelings of control to resist temptations and can have a powerful influence on reaching our goals.
