Am I in Perimenopause?

If you’re in your mid-40s and have noticed changes in the timing and flow of your menstrual cycle, there’s a good chance that you’ve entered perimenopause. There are two phases that define perimenopause:

  • Phase 1 is marked by a change in the length of your cycle by 7 or more days (for example, if you previously had a 28 day cycle, your cycles are now 20 days). Bleeding may be heavier or lighter than normal. In addition to irregularities in the timing and flow of the menstrual cycle, women may report symptoms such as insomnia, mood swings, and/or more intense PMS.
  • Phase 2 is when the cycle lengthens to 60+ days. Most women will have their final menstrual period and enter menopause within 1-3 years of phase 2. This is typically the time when women experience hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

Many women want to know if they can have their hormones tested to confirm they are in perimenopause. Testing hormones is typically not indicated to diagnose perimenopause in a woman 45 years of age or older.  There are other lab tests that can be useful, however, to help ease her transition and be proactive with her health during this time.

However, there are two situations where hormone testing may be indicated:

  • When a woman under 45 years of age stops having regular, predictable menstrual cycles.
  • Assessing a woman’s perimenopause/menopause status when she has an IUD
