As the fun and joy of the holiday season draws near, so does the temptation of sweets in the office and rich meals for dinner. Commit to staying healthy this month by following these tips:

1. Keep up your regular health routine as much as possible (exercise, sleep, drinking lots of water, eating breakfast and packing a lunch for work). Eating well isn’t an “all or none” principle; you can still enjoy holiday food in moderation without sabotaging a healthy diet and lifestyle.

2. Slow down and take time to enjoy your meal. Chew thoroughly, and put your fork down between bites. It takes 20 minutes for our stomach to send the signal to our brain that we’re full, so make sure you wait at least this long before going for seconds.

3. Don’t skip meals to save on calories. Going to an event famished often backfires and sets us up for an evening of overindulgence.

4. Skip the appetizers or choose veggies instead (salad, or vegetables with dip). Most appetizers are rich and high in calories, and is often like having two meals in one sitting! Avoid the temptation by standing away from the appetizers (out of sight, out of mind!) and having a hot drink instead (hot drinks are great for curbing our appetite).

5. Rather than eating a little bit of every dessert, choose one that you know you love and take your time to enjoy it.
