When it comes to achieving lifelong health and longevity, we know that prevention is the best medicine. Consistently eating a healthy diet, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, maintaining a strong support network, and keeping stress levels in check sets the foundation for good health. It is also important to have an annual blood test and follow the screening guidelines for pap, mammography, bone density, etc. (see guidelines below). Always keep a copy of your results, and if you need help interpreting them please ask during your visit!

Cervical Cancer – the Ontario Cervical Screening Program recommends Pap tests every 3 years starting at age 21 for women who are or have ever been sexually active. Pap tests can stop at age 70 if you’ve had three or more normal tests in the past 10 years.

Diabetes – the Canadian Diabetes Association recommends screening every 3 years starting at age 40. Screening may start earlier for women at high risk for diabetes.

Breast Cancer – the Ontario Breast Screening Program recommends screening with mammography every two years for women at average risk who are 50-74 years of age. Women 75 and over can discuss with their medical or naturopathic doctor whether they should continue screening.

Colon Cancer – ColonCancerCheck recommends women ages 50-74 be screened every two years with a Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) . Women 75 and over can discuss with their medical or naturopathic doctor whether they should continue screening.

Osteoporosis – Osteoporosis Canada recommends women 65 years and older be screened with a bone mineral density test. Screening may start earlier for women at high risk for fracture.

Note: women with a family history of any of the above diseases should speak with their naturopathic or medical doctor about when they should start earlier screening.
